What is a Drug Formulary?

A drug formulary is a list of medications covered under GHC-SCW's prescription drug benefit. These medications are reviewed by the GHC-SCW Formulary Committee for safety, effectiveness and overall value. The GHC-SCW Formulary Committee is comprised of physicians and other health care providers to ensure that quality of care is a priority when determining whether or not a medication is included on GHC-SCW's Formulary.

GHC-SCW's Formulary has been designed so there is a variety of drug choices within any given class of medications. For example, GHC-SCW's Formulary has over 30 different drugs to treat high blood pressure, at least 8 drugs for high cholesterol and more than 15 drugs to treat depression. This gives our physicians a choice when selecting a medication to best meet a patient's medical needs.

GHC-SCW's Formulary consists of generic and brand name drugs that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The formulary may periodically change for a number of reasons:

  • The GHC-SCW Formulary Committee reviews new drugs approved by the FDA throughout the year and may choose to add a new drug to the formulary based on the review.
  • As brand name drugs lose their patents and new generic drugs become available, the GHC-SCW Formulary Committee will select an equivalent generic drug to replace the brand name drug on the formulary.
  • The GHC-SCW Formulary Committee may determine that an existing formulary drug is no longer the best choice available, considering safety, effectiveness and value.
